Northwind Trading · Q3 Platform Renewal · $86,000 · closes 31 Oct · next call Thu 11 Jun · sample deal

Commission is won in discovery.

The deal is decided months before the close, in a call that ended one question early. SalesWolf reads the calls you have already had, marks how deep each dimension actually goes, and writes the four questions to ask on Thursday.

Nineteen seconds, on 14 May

Discovery call · 41 minutes · a call that went well

Priya Voss · VP Operations, Northwind

Honestly, the renewal isn’t the hard part. Getting it through Ravi’s team is the hard part — he owns the budget line this year, not me.

You changed the subject

You

Right, that makes sense. So on the integration side —

Nineteen seconds. That is the entire appearance of your economic buyer across every call on this deal. It was a good call — the pain, the number, and the honest edge of what she can do alone. Then she named the one person who signs, and the conversation moved on, the way conversations do.

You did not need to catch it live. You need to know it before Thursday.

How deep, not how many

ten dimensions, scored off the calls — and not a mark out of ten. Every dimension has rungs a fact has to climb before it is worth anything at close:a criterion you have named is not one you have proven; a champion who likes you is not one who has been tested. Here is where this deal actually sits, and the line that put it there.Nobody filled in a form.

What the two empty ladders cost

Not on their ladder at all: who signs, and how long the paper takes — two of the ten. Today they cost one question each: Ravi is one introduction away, and Priya has already offered to make it.

The deal does not die. It moves one quarter to the right, andyour number does not move with it.

9 Jun

Today. Both blanks cost one question each.

5 Sep

Last day to start the paperwork if procurement runs eight weeks.

17 Oct

Last day to start it if procurement runs two.

31 Oct

The renewal date. After this it is next quarter’s number, not this one’s.

Counted back from this sample deal’s own close date. No benchmark, no lift, no claim.

What to ask on Thursday

Thu 11 Jun · 30 minutes · Priya Voss + Sam Okafor

four questions, in this order, for a 30 minutes call. Each one is aimed at a single rung this deal has not reached. None asks Priya to justify a decision — each assumes the answer exists and asks what shape it takes, which is the difference between a question and an audit. You will get through two. That is what the order is for.

Pre-call — Northwind Trading, Thu 11 Jun · every question carries the blank it closes

  1. Economic Buyer
    1. named
    2. motivated
    3. engaged
Not on the ladder · ask this one first

“When Ravi approved the last thing this size, what did he actually see — a business case, a one-pager, someone in a room?”

he owns the budget line this year, not mePriya Voss · discovery call · 14 May · 22:14

The rung this buysMotivated is the rung above a name: you know what he personally needs this to do for him. Most deals are forecast on the name alone. His answer also tells you whether you are writing a document this week.

  2. Paper Process
    1. listed
    2. owned
    3. dated
    Not on the ladder

“Once he’s said yes — how long did the paperwork take the last time you renewed something this size?”

Nothing. In 3 calls and 1 email thread, nobody has said how long procurement takes. It has not been asked. No source · the blank this question exists for

The rung this buysA paper step is listed when you know it exists, owned when a named person on their side carries it, and dated when you know roughly when. You need all three and you have none. Her answer gives you the last safe day to start — if it is eight weeks, that day is 5 September.

  3. Champion
    1. candidate

    4. tested
    At candidate

“If you were putting this in front of Ravi without me in the room, what’s the version that lands — and what’s the bit he pushes back on?”

I’ll take it to Ravi, but he’ll want the numbers first.Priya Voss · discovery call · 14 May · 34:05

The rung this buysA champion is motivated when they have a personal win, influential once you have watched them move somebody, and tested only after they have carried something for you and delivered. Priya is a candidate. Whether she has a version rehearsed is the first evidence either way.

  4. Decision Criteria
    1. named
    2. positioned
    3. proven
    At named

“You said security review is the one that always bites you. What did it kill last time?”

Security review is the one that always bites us.Priya Voss · discovery call · 14 May · 31:40

The rung this buysNamed is where most criteria die: you know it is on the list, you do not know how you score against it, and you certainly cannot prove it. A casualty from last time hands you the bar and, usually, what it takes to clear it.

They are in this order because each answer makes the next one easy to ask. If Priya answers only the first, Thursday was worth the 30 minutes. nine of the ten dimensions are still short of their top rung; these four are the ones a 30 minutes call can actually move.

One at a time · never a script · the last one exists because somebody said “security” on 14 May and nobody followed it

And the follow-up writes itself

Discovery Recap · drafted from 3 calls and 1 email thread

Recap — Northwind Trading · the same asks, in writing, so they survive the call

What I heard

Priya — capturing this so you can correct me before I take it any further. You are carrying nine hours a week of manual reconciliation across four people1, which you costed at roughly $96,000 a year fully loaded2. The renewal itself is not in question — the constraint is the approval path, not the product3.

What I still need from you

  • An introduction to Ravi, and what he wants in front of him before he signs off.
  • Once he approves, roughly how long the paperwork has taken at Northwind before.
  • Whether the budget line moving to his team changes the 31 October date.

One thing I want to check

Sam mentioned an incumbent contract running to the end of the calendar year4 — if that overlaps our start date I would rather know in June than in October. And if it is easier, I can put the first two in front of Ravi directly.

You already had the calls. Walk into the next one knowing what they left open.
